Restore the Shore

Me and Uncle Joe
Long Island was hit pretty hard in October by Hurricane Sandy. Actually, that's an understatement. The shoreline was destroyed! It's going to be a long road to recovery. The parks and beaches need all of the help they can get. Luckily, there is a great organization in New Jersey called Clean Ocean Action that created ForTheShore.org. They are organizing volunteer events all over NY and NJ.

I volunteered at one of their events in January. It was a National Day of Service declared by President Obama. The event took place at Jones Beach which suffered $1 million in damage to the beaches and another $1 million in damage to the roadways. New Yorkers come from all corners of the metro area to Jones Beach during the summer, but many don't realized just how devastated their summer getaway spot is.

Jones Beach will have volunteer cleanup events every month throughout 2013. The next one is Saturday, February 23rd and you can signup by clicking here. I'll be there (look for my red hat)! Volunteering is good for the mind, body and soul. So, get out to Jones Beach and help restore one of Long Island's favorite beaches!
